Alrighty then. So, I did a lot of investigating last night, and it turns out that our little kitteh has quite the history behind him. So, here's the deal.

First off, [livejournal.com profile] bronxelf_ag001 took him to the vet yesterday. It turns out that he's perfectly healthy, and no tick, no fleas, no ear mites, none of that stuff. Also, the vet said that he had, in fact, already been neutered, and fairly recently it would seem.

Then the news that made my heart sink straight to the ground for a moment - he did have an electronic ID chip in him. But, the vet was quick to assure us, that might not necessarily mean much. It could very well have come from a generic batch that the ASPC, or some such, issues as standard when they get in stray animals.

Anyway, he said that he was required by law to give me the tag number. But after that, it was entirely up to me as to what I would do with that info, and as far as he was concerned given the circumstances, if I let the issue go, Benny was as good as my cat.

*sigh*

But, I just couldn't do that. I just had to know. I had to know where this little guy had been, and what had happened to him. I had total butterflies in my stomach, as I dialed the number he gave me, knowing that the slightest bit of too much probing could start maybe raising flags, and that would be the end of my new found Daddy 'yote-ness.

Well, anyway. So I got some lady on the phone, told her I wanted to inquire about a pet ID chip. And the first thing she asked me, was my name, address, and phone number, which I gave kind of on automatic pilot - Stupid stupid stupid!! Now, they had me already, if they turned up anything untoward. My idiot yote brain only caught up with this fact, just as I finished giving out the actual tag number.

So, I sat there silently kicking my own ass, as I waited for her to get her computer search on. But, she comes back with good news! She found the tag, and, according to her system, no owner had ever registered it at all! Woot! So, I asked her what I needed to do to get him in my name, and she said she'd send me out the forms in the mail straight away.

But no, I couldn't stop there, could I? I couldn't just leave well enough alone, and had to dig deeper, if they had any idea of how all this had happened So, she told me that that particular tag was from a batch given to a local animal care and control center (read: pound) in Manhattan. And, she gave me the number for them.

Well, I'm feeling all cocky now, cause I've already been told the cat is unclaimed, so I figured I just call on up, and try to tidy up the last little details of the mystery.

***

Call 'em up, give 'em my name and number freely this time, and read off the tag.

I fucking almost died with the next words out of this lady's mouth. "Oh yeah, we got that one, his name is "Mickey", and he's registered to a Miss Ramirez, of 99th street, Rego Park." She also had that other number written on his collar in her system, as well.

Shit shit shit shit shit!!!!!

*sigh*

Fuck!!!

Well, alright... so what's the deal with all this? I explained to her how and where I found... "Mickey" (on 62 road, as opposed to 99th street), and that we got him unstuck from a tree. So she's all like, "well, I got her number right here, let me get her on the phone."

The whole weekend starts flashing before my eyes, and I'm litterally about to start crying right there on the phone.

But then, from her: "Hmm, that's odd... it's saying that the number is out of service."

Mrao?

Then she does some more checking, and then I hear, "Hmm... wow, this lady has a lot of cats..."

And now I'm just like, ookay... WTF? I asked her, alright, well... what is the legal status of this cat, then? I called it in, and you know who I am now. Am I actually legally obligated to go over to this lady's place and contact her myself?

She told me that, no, she has to do a found cat write up. But, that just stays at the clinic, and it's up to our Miss Ramirez to actually go on over there, checking to see if anyone has reported her cat. And this place was in Manhattan mind you, and I'd found him in Rego Park - many miles away, and clear accross the East River!

So, I ask her to check further back, and see if she can figure out just WTF is going on here. And here it is, m'kay? You're gonna love this.

Ramirez adopts Benny (fuck this 'Mickey' jazz), and at some point subsequently, takes him to the vet. Probably to be vaccinated. She never picks him up! After waiting for awhile, the vet, having no other choice, takes him back to the animal shelter. Ramirez later shows up there to claim him again.

And then, she does the whole fucking routine again! Takes him to the vet (probably this was when he got neutered), never fucking picked him up, and the vet put him back at the animal shelter again, where she eventually skulks in one more time, and gets him. This last was on May 20th, according to the animal shelter lady (who's name was Stephanie, by the way, and deserves to be named, for her kindness and helpfullness)

So the basic consensus is, this Ramirez chick, crazy cat lady that she must be, apparently goes around adopting every cat she can find under the sun, without any kind of time or wherewithal to care for them, takes them to the vet, then never shows up again, thus stiffing them for the bill, and finally arrives in the nick of time at the shelter, so she can 'rescue' them once again. Furthermore, she either can't/won't pay her phone bill, so that no one is able to find her, and put a stop to her malfeasance.

And then, at 12:00 midnight (hmm... interesting that, no?) of Friday night, the powers that be delivered him unto me. The rest you already know, from my previous posts this week.

At this point, Stephanie was sounding just as pissed about the whole thing as I was. She asked me if I was wanting to keep the cat, and I said you're damn right! So she said alright, she's filed the report, and Ramirez has six weeks to come looking for him there (not bloodly likely this time, since now she would have actually 'lost' him in Rego Park, and why would she think to go looking all the way back in Manhattan?) And after that, the cat is mine, free and clear.

So in the meantime, either way, "Mickey" is the name of Ramirez. I baptize him Benny, and I wash the Ramirez away. I'm gonna be keeping a close eye on my calendar, but I seriously doubt I'll be hearing from the bitch. Even if I somehow do, I'm pretty sure that I can prevail upon her to let me keep him. Through showing her the kindness and good home I've bestowed upon him, if possible. Through threatening to charge her with animal cruelty, if necessary, and Stephanie's certainly got the records to prove it.

***

In any case, Benny is healthy, happy, and in the good care of Bronxelf, for the moment. I'll be going up there again to bring him back on Monday.

Welcome home Benny, I love you :)

Cats are friends, not food.

Just keep swimming.

Luck with catz. Maybe it'll grow up and become a musical. o_O

Wow -- that's quite a story. It's amazing to me how sometimes you just fall for someone, whether person or animal, and you have no control over your feelings. It sounds like, in this case, the powers of the universe are at work, and for good.

I'm glad to hear that you went through the whole process of trying to find the owner -- things sure would have been different if Miss Ramirez had turned out to be a devestated 8-year-old girl.

Before being too harsh on her, think of this -- the shelters in Manhattan (except for one that I know of) destroy unadapted animals within about a week or two. This woman is adapting cats in large numbers, having them neutered, not claiming them, and then adapting them again when they get to the pound again.

That doesn't sound like neglegence -- it sounds like she has figured out the game, and is devoting her life to saving the lives of these animals with the little means that she has.

She would probably be utterly thrilled to hear that Benny is getting a good home.

Enjoy your new life, and don't be too hard on him if he scratches up the couch -- it's in his nature.

Hmm... yes, I suppose you may have some good points there. Well, maybe I'll give miss Ramirez the benefit of the doubt then. So long as she leaves this one be, now ;)

Anyway, thank you for your kind words. And yeah... well the couch is pretty much toast anyway, no big loss. I suppose it's my plushies that may fear for their lives now, though. *sigh* What can I say, love hurts ;)

I agree with Scott there. I think she is leaving cats at the vet to get them neutered hoping that someone will adopt them now they are neutered and have their shots and when they don't, she gets them. At least I hope.

Either way it looks like you can keep your cat. If she's taking care of the cats, she'll be happy that this one has a home. If she isn't, then she won't care one is missing.

Maybe we can get a breathing mask for Noah, then. So I take it that's what you were referring to about your Boston experience the, eh? ;-P

Quite a kitty-history there. I was curious to know the history of teh Bennyness. Its pretty interesting how crazy cat-lady tries to get free vet care, and I sincerely hope this person doesn't call back for the kitty.

Can't wait for the six weeks, then you'll have Benny. =3
No bat tonight either, I'm afraid.. Granny comes from Florida for a visit. Next week!

Grrrrr... Don't let no bitch take yo kitten! You buy your self a ten gallon hat and hide him there if she comes looking!
All they know is your address and that you have him, they can't track location with those ID tags... or else they'd have them in people.
